Loveable monsters for all
I watched Monsters vs Aliens last night. It was too good a movie. I may be a bit prejudiced as I love animation movies. Like all animation movies, this too has several layers of meaning and not just a cartoon for the entertainment of kids.
The movie is hillarious, especially its take on the American president (not Obama). It also pokes at the general notion that these politicians are good for nothing. Reese Witherspoon gave her voice to the lead character Susan and does a brilliant job at that.
Susan was to get married to Derek, a weatherman in a local channel who could dream about nothing but his career. On the day of her marriage Susan is hit by a falling meteor and soon increases in size. She is seized by the army and taken to a top secret prison for monsters. Here she meets the other monsters - a scientist who had the head of a cockroach, a gelly, a huge insect and an ancient water monster.
The meteor had special power that the alien Galactrix was looking for and he sends a robot probe to Earth to get it and Susan. When the army finds it impossible to stop the robot, it calls for the monsters and led by Susan the monsters destroys the robot. But Galactrix follows and captures Susan, in the process killing the monster insect. He successfully extracts the special power from Susan and starts creating an army of aliens to rule over Earth.
The other three monsters, in the meantime, infiltrates the alien ship and rescues Susan, who has lost all her power. They are also successful in aborting Galactrix's plans. When he tries to escape Susan stops him and gets back her power. Together the monsters save Earth and Susan realises how big a jerk Derek is.
Even if you now know the story, the movie is still worth a watch. It is brilliantly made and will leave you in splits of laughter. Go watch it or else I can lend it to you.
